The only difference between the two is the handle: one is made of solid hinoki and is slightly thicker, while the other is slightly slimmer and made of stained wood with hard, durable EVA foam at the end of the handle to dampen vibrations.
This version also has a slightly more head-heavy weight distribution. Currently weighing just around 85 g, it is pleasantly light.
In terms of its veneer combination, the Ultra Carbon DEF is identical to the Ultra Carbon and the new Ultra Carbon DEF 2021.
The blade therefore consists of a total of five veneers and two carbon inserts, with an overall thickness of approximately 6.1 mm. The outer veneers are Limba, the intermediate veneers are Koto, and the core veneer is Ayous. The carbon inserts are made from carbon fleece, which is the thinnest and softest type of carbon.
The Ultra Carbon DEF offers all the advantages of a carbon blade: exceptional controllability and forgiveness for even technically imperfect shots.
However, it also offers something you could not previously expect from a carbon blade: sensitive and rather soft ball contact. You can play passive shots, such as backspin, effectively. It also provides optimum elasticity, promoting powerful offensive shots and play with maximum spin. Therefore, the Ultra Carbon DEF is only slightly stiffer than comparably fast blades without carbon.
It is ideally suited to all types of specialised rubber, including short or long pimples, and anti-spin rubbers. It can significantly increase the disruptive effect, consequently winning over many players who would otherwise not consider using carbon blades.
However, it is not intended for players who use two inverted rubbers on both sides. This is partly due to its significantly larger hitting surface (approx. 162 x 157 mm). Although the Ultra Carbon DEF is by no means slow — it is actually faster than many of our all-round blades — it remains a clear defensive blade.
It is the perfect blade for a modern defensive style of play, combining an offensive rubber on the forehand side with 'material' on the backhand side to disrupt the opponent's play. Classic backspin defence also works very well with this blade when combined with the right long-pimpled rubber, such as the SpinLord Agenda.
Please note that the Ultra Carbon DEF has a very linear play style. Consequently, it does not offer the same damping effect during passive play as balsa blades do, but it is significantly more predictable in its behaviour. Experience shows that players in lower divisions often value the dampening effect more, whereas professionals generally do not use balsa blades because they prioritise absolute predictability in all playing situations.

The playing surfaces (outer veneers) of this table tennis blade must be sealed to prevent damage to the blade.
If they are not sealed, the rubber adhesive can seep into the top veneer, causing it to flake off.
Furthermore, the top veneer may fray when the rubber is removed.
